ELIO FIORE, DAL POEMETTO

'MIRYAM DI NAZARETH'
 
 

Elio Fiore era talmente innamorato di Maria, da riconoscere i tratti moderni, attualissimi, nel volto di una homeless con figlio al seguito, su una strada addobbata per le feste natalizie, tra gente frettolosa e distratta, di una qualunque città dell'opulento mondo occidentale. Scriveva:

Elio Fiore was so much in love with Maria, with discovering in her modern features, in our present, in the face of a 'homeless' with her child following her, in a street bedecked for Christmastide, amongst hurrying, distracted people, in some city in our rich western world. He wrote:

        Maria era tutta vestita di nero,
        stava per terra, ferma, composta,
        tra le braccia stringeva Gesù.

Mary was all dressed in black,
standing on the ground, firm, composed,
between her arms holding Jesus.

Sull'affollato corso i passanti,
andavano distratti, senza guardare,
senza dare una lira di elemosina.

On the crowded street the passersby
went distracted, not looking,
without giving one lira of alms.

Maria aveva gli occhi chiusi,
ma due lacrime scendevano
dal viso. Gesù mi sorrideva,

Mary's eyes were closed
but two tears trickled down
her face. Jesus smiled at me

mentre s'accendevano  le luci
sul mercato di lusso, sfavillante
di regali, di stelle e di angeli.

while the lights turned on
in the luxury stores, sparkling
with gifts, with stars, with angels.

Gesù mi stringeva forte la mano
e in quel sorriso innocente,
sentivo tutto il dolore del mondo . . .

Jesus clasped my hand
and in that innocent smile
I felt all the sorrow of the world . . .

Una sorta di natività mendicante che, come possiamo vedere, ben poco ha da spartire con l'immagine, oleografica e un po' dolciastra, di tanta poesia devozionale mariana.

A sort of beggar Nativity that, as we see, has little to do with the sentimental and somewhat saccharine images of so much Marian devotional poetry.
